Athletic Field Maintenance Intern - Temporary Part-Time Position

Summary:
The University of Portland is a National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I institution and West Coast Conference (WCC) member. This position provides support for the care, maintenance, and renovation of all intercollegiate athletic fields and grounds at the University.

This is a temporary, part-time & part-year, non-exempt, hourly position (generally 29 hours or less per week) without benefits. However, this position does accrue sick time consistent with Oregon state requirements. (Please note that eligibility for all University benefits is subject to applicable policies, practices, and requirements.)

Responsibilities:
Assist in all maintenance practices: mowing, aeration, topdressing, overseeding, grooming, and other related areas.

Participate in fertilization and equipment calibration, including granular and foliar.

Participate in field renovations, including fraze mowing and grow-in.

Assist with irrigation scheduling and repairs.

Assist with equipment operation and maintenance; equipment includes mowers, utility vehicles, tractors, blowers, etc.

Participate in game day preparations, including mowing of patterns, marking and painting, field setup, and other related areas.

Display professionalism and engage in active learning.

Other duties as relevant to the duties of the position or as assigned by supervisor or supervisor’s designee.

Requirements:
Education and Experience

Required: prior experience and/or education directly relevant to the duties of this position; basic understanding of principles and concepts related to turf grass management.

Strongly Preferred: Degree or working towards a degree in Turf Management, Agronomy, Plant Science, Horticulture, or equivalent discipline.

Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.

Certificates and Licenses Required

Required: active driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn NCAA (or other sport governing body) rules and regulations applicable to athletic fields and grounds.

Ability to use and learn computers, technology, software, and applications at the level of sophistication required for the duties of this position, including, without limitation, Microsoft Office and the internet.

Physical Requirements

Frequently: while performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, twist, use fingers and hands to handle materials and tools or equipment, and reach with hands and/or arms.

Frequently: the employee must frequently lift, move, or use items or equipment ranging from ten to fifty pounds with or without assistance.

Frequently: the employee is regularly required to use field maintenance equipment such as mowers, tractors, loaders, blowers, and string trimmers.

Occasionally to frequently: the employee is required to sit, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

When lifting is required, employees are asked to use good judgment, make safety a top priority, and ask for assistance of others or of equipment as necessary.

Working Conditions

Hours of employment: Position requires working long, irregular, and flexible hours, including regular business hours, mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary, as well as attendance at home events. Sometimes attendance at away events may be required.

Work related stress: Stress from work related situations such as those involving competitive, challenging, urgent, or time?sensitive matters.

Overtime: Overtime hours may be required with little or no notice.

Other: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions (wind, rain, cold, heat) and risk of electrical shock. This position works with vibration causing tools or equipment. The employee may sometimes be exposed to high, precarious places, blood borne pathogens, and caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
