Overview
The Silviculture Development and Application Manager for Genetic Gains is RMS’s specialist. This combined with their applied forest science and management background, will provide the knowledge and expertise required to support the creation of next-generation silvicultural strategies to drive forest productivity and investment performance.
As a member of the Forest Productivity Team, they will also work collaboratively and independently on Team initiatives and provide support, technical advice, and knowledge transfer to the broader business.
Responsibilities
Silvicultural Business Model:
- Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a Silvicultural Business Model (SBM) to deliver RMS and investor objectives. The SBM is the framework where intellectual capital and new technology create the opportunity to translate the investor objectives into business-wide day-to-day operations, delivering consistent and targeted silvicultural management.
Research, Development, and Technology Transfer:
- Plan, develop, and implement forest productivity research. This can include but is not limited to internal RMS research, research with strategic partners, and research through University Cooperatives.
- Assist with implementing new technologies that improve forest management results/returns.
- Train and support Operations foresters in technical aspects of the timber management business.
Operational Support
- Identify opportunities for consolidation and standardization of forestry practices.
- Document Standard Operating Procedures for the forestry practices which deliver the Silvicultural Standards.
- Develop and introduce support tools for forestry operational management.
- Aid, collaborate, and liaise to support the delivery of forestry practices and the maintenance of a sustainable and productive business and forest-growing environment.
Duties
Activities include, but are not limited to:
- Periodic review of silvicultural management
- Design and document site-specific Silvicultural Standards to deliver investor objectives.
- Design and maintain measurement and reporting systems to ensure compliance with prescribed Silvicultural Standards.
- Manage research and development, as well as technology and knowledge transfer.
- Document Standard Operating Procedures for the forestry practices which deliver the Silvicultural Standards.
- Minimum 5 years of professional work experience in forest management.
- Bachelor-level degree in Forestry or related Natural Resources program. Masters-level degree in Forestry or related Natural Resources program.
- Proficiency in written, oral, and digital communication.
- Ability to travel regularly within the US South.
- Industrial-scale forest management
- Project management
- Research and forestry:
- sampling methodology,
- experimental design,
- statistical analysis, and
- technical writing.
- Forestry management software and tools, e.g., relational databases (SQL server), Geographic Information Systems (e.g., ArcGIS), statistical software (e.g., R, Python) and office products (MS Office).
